Chapter 1:

A Childhood Friend, a Sister, a Lizard, and Me

THE MOMENT I was home, I raced to my room to check on Destiny, before even glancing at my PC. It was eating some fruit I assumed Dad or Sayuki gave it, but its dinner wasn’t the issue. It was with me last night. Maybe it crawled into my backpack looking for a place to stay warm?

“Destiny, did you do…whatever that was last night?” I looked it in its huge, round eyes.

It stared back for a brief second before returning its attention to the fruit.

“Right…what am I thinking? Lizards can’t do that kinda stuff. Hey, Destiny, I’m sorry for not paying you enough attention, but d’you mind not hiding in places like that? Sayuki said I should keep you out of the cold.”

Leaving Destiny to its fruit, I sat in front of my PC. My villagers were working hard, and everything seemed peaceful. Murus didn’t let her emotions show on her face, but sometimes I caught her staring up at the sky or wistfully into the forest. Healing would take time.

I checked through the backlog to see if anything had happened while I was gone, but I didn’t find anything interesting. The whole stalking incident messed me up so much, I worried that I might’ve forgotten something important, so I cast my mind back to what happened in my village the day before.

My villagers went to Murus’s village and met Dordold, the merchant. They collected a ton of necessities to help them through the winter. Rodice mentioned they had plenty to last the season now, even if they did end up taking more people in.

I’d performed so many miracles lately that my villagers’ gratitude towards me had increased, meaning I had a lot of FP saved up. I used a fair bit controlling that tiny statue, but it didn’t cost nearly as much as the 1,000 FP for summoning the full-sized golem. I didn’t know if that was because it was smaller or because it cost less the second time. Either way, it still wasn’t cheap. I’d need to spend sparingly.

“If only I were rich enough to use miracles whenever I wanted. Sorry, guys. Your God’s broke.”

Having less money did make it seem more valuable, in a way. My game was important, but I did want to put some of my wages towards my family, too. That’s what stopped me from spamming miracles until my wallet ran dry. I didn’t want to get in the habit of constantly doing microtransactions, either. I needed just enough FP to save my villagers from any trouble they encountered.

I sighed and looked at the screen. Carol was helping Lyra and Chem with some chores, while Rodice went through the items they’d collected from Murus’s village and bought from Dordold. Murus and Gams were out patrolling the area. As always, my villagers were working hard for their survival. I couldn’t help but think that adding more FP to my virtual wallet could help them live more comfortably.
